Oscars 2021: Chloe Zhao took home the best directing trophy and Nomadland won the best picture
The Oscars 2021 awards were held on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. It was the 93rd academy awards. The Academy has already announced in June 2020 that it has to postpone the ceremony to April 25, 2021, from its originally scheduled date of February 28 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby extending the eligibility period for feature films to February 28.
The eligibility criteria had already been modified to account for films that were originally intended to be released on theatre but released directly to streaming services instead.
The nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced live on March 15, 2021, in a global Livestream by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas on the awards’ official website.
This Oscars 2021 awards had created history in so many ways, After years of criticism for a lack of diversity, this year’s slate of nominees contained some notable firsts. It was the first time an all-Black producing team was nominated for best picture, the first time two actors of Asian descent received a nod for best actor, and the first year that two women were nominated for best director. When the winners were revealed, it reflected this spirit of inclusion.
Chloe Zhao made history at the 93rd Academy Awards as the first woman of color to win the Oscar for Best Director for Nomadland, which also won Best Picture. She’s also only the second woman in Oscar history to win the award after The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow. Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for his work in The Father over the late Chadwick Boseman, who died last year of cancer and has swept awards season so far for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
